ACTIVITIES WEEK 2025

From the 23rd to the 27th June 2025 it was Activities Week at Mary and Joseph House. FLIGHT CLUB – During activity week our residents enjoyed lunch out and a competitive game of interactive darts at flight club in Manchester. QUARRY BANK MILL – Stepping back in time to the industrial revolution and taking a tour of their mills and various gardens. BLACKPOOL PLEASURE BEACH – During activity week we took a trip to Blackpool pleasure beach and the pier. After an adrenaline fuelled afternoon at the pleasure beach we had a relaxing time on the pier and arcades. BOWLING – We took a trip to Ashton to enjoy an afternoon of bowling and air hockey! NATIONAL PORTRATE GALLERY – We took a trip to the untold stories exhibition in collaboration with the National portrait gallery. KNOWSLEY SAFARI PARK – We visited Knowsley safari Park, getting close and personal to all of the animal kingdom. IN-HOUSE CASINO – we invited a mobile casino  to bring Vegas to our residents at Mary & Joseph house! We   enjoyed an afternoon of Blackjack and roulette.

Gardening & Carpentry Corner

In the month of June our residents have been giving our gardens a new lease of life with a selection of new plants and weeding our gardens. Our residents have also been planting some new colourful foliage in our window boxes. CARPENTRY CORNER – This month our residents have been busy starting a memorial garden project within the woodland walk in the lower gardens. We hope the garden when completed will be a quiet and peaceful place for people to come and relax and reflect. Beginning with the pergola we began by preparing the wooden posts and mixing up the concrete. Pictured one of our residents mixing up the concrete and placing the posts ready for concreting.

VE Day Celebrations

To celebrate the 80th anniversary of VE day we held our very own garden party with a lovely BBQ made by our catering team. After lunch we held a competitive circuit of games including boules and croquet and our residents competed for the top spot. Pictured below, all our winners!

St George’s Day

23 Apr

To celebrate St Georges day we visited Father Matthias’s parish for their annual St Georges Day celebrations. After a buffet and raffle draw we enjoyed some live music including some lovely  traditional bagpipes performance. Our resident’s came home with a generous amount of prizes from the raffle. Pictured above, one of our residents won an Easter Egg. In the house we celebrated with a traditional tournament of croquet, accompanied by some great British weather.

Out-of-house activities

An afternoon walk at Hollingworth Lake In February, the sun has been shining so we took a trip to Hollingworth lake, taking in the lovely natural surroundings. Our residents enjoyed taking in the views, finding tree sculptures and bird watching. A day of sun and sea in Blackpool In the month of March we took a trip to Blackpool to visit the Club 3000 bingo and had some authentic Blackpool fish and chips. We took advantage of the nice weather and took a stroll along the beach, where the residents also enjoyed some ice creams!

February in-house activities

This month, in our Bistro, our residents have been involved in a pizza making workshop, making cheese and onion pasties from scratch and had various bread making sessions! Also, in the art room, we’ve been all about mosaics. Pictured below, one of our residents has been working on his Stockport County FC piece and our other resident has been making coasters.

Celebrating Chinese New Year

In January we celebrated Chinese new year, with a selection of games, workshops and activities! We began our celebrations with a sculptural snake workshop to commemorate this year’s animal being the snake. Our residents used foil and mod rock to create the shape then decorating them with acrylic paint and gold foil. In the bistro our residents created a Chinese noodle soup and had a taste testing session with a selection of other Chinese cuisine. We also held our annual chopstick challenge competition where our resident’s had to transfer a number of objects using only their chopsticks. Another fun day at M&J!

Christmas Variety Show

19 Dec

For our annual festive show, this year we chose a variety show to showcase all our varied talent in Mary and  Joseph house. Below, the slug slayers kicked off the show with their rendition of king of the road followed by Folsom prison blues: Afterwards we welcomed our Elvis double act.    We had a ventriloquist, a performance of ‘The Ugly Duckling’ and another singing act from one of our residents. For the big finale they performed our very own choreographed Bavarian dance! And finally, to close the show, we brought everyone back on stage for our annual tradition of singing do they know its Christmas!

Christmas Jumper Day

During the month of December we celebrated our annual Christmas Jumper Day with singing a selection of Christmas carols and selecting our winner for the best Christmas Jumper of 2024! This Year we decided our winner with a twist, each of a our participants cat-walked to show us why they should be crowned our winner! Gary was crowned our winner of the 2024 Christmas Jumper Day competition, winning a Santa Claus jar filled with festive treats!

Remembrance Day 2024

To commemorate remembrance day we created a group painting of a stained glass style poppy field and each of our residents completed a section of the painting. Below are all of our residents who took part in the  remembrance day projects. After the two minute silence one of our residents chose to read in Flanders field to commemorate our fallen soldiers. Also pictured below, our residents decorated their crosses and placed them in Our display pictured below with all of our resident’s and staff who came together to commemorate Remembrance Day.
