M&J Garden Party

On the 11th of July M&J opened up our doors to families and friends of the residents and staff for a Garden Party. On the day we had entertainment from the house band, an arts & crafts table, wild science, large garden games and a BBQ. Above, our residents enjoying holding one of the snakes from Wild Science. Above, Andy & the house band performing some classics for everyone. Thank you to everyone who came, it makes us proud that residents and staff want their families and friends to visit our home. We hope to do this again next year!

Celebrating Earl – 20 years of service!

In June we celebrated Earl and his 20 years of service at Mary & Joseph House. Earl came to M&J as a night care worker and has worked his way up to being one of our Assistant Managers. Our residents and staff got together to celebrate this milestone with him and shared heartfelt stories of his memorable antics throughout the years. Here’s to many more joyful years, Earl!

ACTIVITIES WEEK 2026

Every year we organise an Activity Week for all the residents. Even though we organise out of house activities throughout the year, Activity Week is a full week of activities that is paid for by the home. BLACKPOOL PLEASURE BEACH – We did this on Monday & Tuesday as so many residents wanted to attend. We also enjoyed some time at the beach at the end of day 2. LIVERPOOL DOCKS & MUSEUM – Wednesday Trip. A nice afternoon boat ride, a look around the museum and a picnic lunch. MANCHESTER UNITED STADIUM TOUR – Wednesday trip with a small group. 2 residents that are Manchester United Fans had a more intimate day out with lunch in the Manchester United CafĂ©. EAST LANCASHIRE RAILWAY AND MUSEUM – Thursday’s trip. A nice ride on the East Lancashire Railways and look around the museum. BIRDS OF PREY & TATTON PARK – Thursday’s trip. A group of men got to get close to multiple different types of birds, followed by an afternoon stroll at Tatton Park. BLACKPOOL PROMENADE – Friday’s trip, a group of our residents wanted to take a stroll around Blackpool and enjoy Fish & Chips.

Manchester City FC parade

Our home is located opposite the Manchester City Etihad Stadium, which means the parade passed right past the home. We have a few residents who are City fans and really wanted to see the players as they went by, so we made this happen for them!

Portland Basin Museum

Our residents explored the Portland Basin Museum in May. This was a social history exhibition and it featured a life-size model house and a traditional fish & chip shop. The museum also has a 1920s street where there are lots of room sets.Some you can go in and touch things. Some have models of people in them. It truly felt like taking a step back in time

Celebrating St George’s Day

We celebrated St George’s Day in the sunshine this year whilst enjoying games and music. This years tournament was ‘It’s a Knockout’ Andy, Dan and Cheryl, who are all part of our Activity Team, dressed up for the occasion. The house Band and Gerry our Therapeutic Music Tutor also performed for everyone in sun. The residents enjoyed the day of activities and loved celebrating St George’s Day. The day ended on a high with everyone enjoying cream cakes!

Art Exhibitions & Craft Groups

This month a groups of our residents visited a number of different art exhibitions. These included; Picasso pieces, The Great Wave and Bob Dylan. We started off with the Picasso Exhibition and whilst there unexpectedly discovered an art exhibition for our residents long-time idol, Bob Dylan. On another outing we visited the ‘Beneath the Great Wave’ Exhibition, exploring the art of Hokusai and Hiroshige, two visionary artists whose images have shaped how we see nature, landscape and everyday life. In the home we have regular craft groups in the communal areas for all residents to get involved in. We recently celebrated Mardi Gras by creating some fabulous carnival masks. It was wonderful to see so many of our residents getting involved. Additionally we honoured International Women’s Day by crafting mixed media portraits of inspirational women.

Gardening and Woodwork Sessions

1 Feb

Daniel works in the woodwork room and the garden with our residents. They have recently been hard at work preparing our garden for spring. Over the past month they have refilled all the allotment beds in anticipation of planting, cleared the woodland area and are making everything look fantastic. Also, Ian prepared the greenhouses for spring, while snowdrops began to bloom along our woodland walk. 2 of our residents below, Garry and Nick, have been hard at work creating some amazing handcrafted items in our woodworking room. Recently, they constructed birdhouses for our woodland walk area, along with a bug hotel! We can’t wait to see how it looks in summer.

Baking in the Bistro

This week the Activity Co-Ordinator and the Catering Manager spent time in the Bistro with some residents baking soda bread. Residents enthusiastically participated in the baking process, creating a variety of flavours. In the end, all the residents and staff had the pleasure of taste-testing the results!
